Overview
The last year has seen violence between people and the government over the forced acquisition of land for industry. Concern has continued to help poor people to strengthen, support and build up their ability to demand greater accountability of their government.
Land rights
Our biggest highlight was being part of the Janadesh march, when more than 25,000 landless persons travelled 350km from Gwalior to Delhi to demand their right to land.
After massive international coverage, the government announced the establishment of a national land reform committee. The video below documents the final stage of the protest.
More achievements in India:
HIV and AIDS
- To counter stigma and discrimination around HIV and AIDS, we organised a photographic exhibition in five districts
- We also organised events around World Aids Day to raise awareness among young people
Emergency responses
- Our tsunami recovery programme came to an end in December 2007, after helping more than 25,000 families through a range of activities including revolving loans
- In the aftermath of the monsoon floods, we distributed emergency relief materials to 10,000 affected families in Bihar
- Concern also helped 14,000 families in Orissa rebuild their homes and livelihoods
