Overview

While Rwanda’s overall political and security situation is stable, the country still faces major challenges in agriculture, population growth and income distribution.

Working with national NGOs, Concern Worldwide continued to help the government consolidate its district annual plans for livelihoods, health, education and HIV and AIDS, significantly contributing to national development priorities.

Achievements in Rwanda:

Education and training

  • 116,131 children and 1,864 teachers benefited from Concern’s education work
  • Pilot schools in the primary education programme increased enrolment rates of 18.4% and reduced drop-out rates of 9%
  • Concern helped 3,153 people earn a more secure living, through seeds and tools for homestead gardens


HIV and AIDS

  • 8,747 people benefited from Concern Rwanda’s HIV and AIDS work, including prevention and support in food production and income creation
  • Awareness was raised among 170 key community and church leaders about their role in fighting against HIV and AIDS


Food and health

  • Community therapeutic care (CTC) nutrition pilot project treated 91 under-fives for severe malnutrition and complications such as malaria, TB and HIV. 32 district health staff were trained in treatment of severe acute malnutrition, supervision and monitoring
  • Communities were helped to elect 4,452 health workers
  • They screened, treated and referred 73,357 children with fever
