Nelson Mandela dies
Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president, who led the country from racial apartheid to democracy, has died.
Paying tribute to Nelson, Concern Worldwide CEO, Dominic MacSorley said:
Mr Mandela was one of the most inspirational figures of this or, indeed, any generation. A testament to the power of education, Mandela, born into poverty, was the first of his family to attend school. This opened up a world of opportunities beyond his village that would enable him to lead the remarkable transformative reconciliation in South Africa.
His influence would extend to all parts of the globe through his tireless work with the Elders, a group of world leaders that includes Desmond Tutu and Mary Robinson, to promote peace, women’s equality, address humanitarian crisis and find solutions to end atrocities around the world. More than anyone, he has shown the power of one individual to change the world.
