Philippines: update

A devastating typhoon in the Philippines has left thousand dead and millions more without homes. Concern Worldwide is raising funds to help. Here is an update on the situation so far.

Aid hubs

Over 11 million people across the Philippines have been affected by typhoon Haiyan. At the moment, aid is being coordinated in hubs which are based in Tacloban City and Roxas City. 1,316 evacuation centres have been set up, but more are needed to help the 659,268 people who have been displaced.

Urgent needs

The phone network is up and running again, but many areas are without electricity or running water.  The people affected urgently need:

  • Food
  • Shelter
  • Water and sanitation

You can help

Reaching people

Getting help to those who need it is crucial, but many roads are blocked by debris from the typhoon, and reaching people isn’t easy, as you can see in the report below.

UN assistance

The Philippine government has accepted the help of the UN, whose disaster assessment and coordination team has been deployed to assess people’s needs, re-establish communication networks and support relief efforts.
