Hunger: Michael’s story

Concern Worldwide specialises in tackling hunger with the most vulnerable people across the world. We’re working with people like Michael Mwangi, who lives in the Korogocho slum, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Recently, food price increases have made life even more unstable. However, with the help of cash transfers from Concern, Michael has been able to get back on his feet.

Michael’s story

Michael says,

We have always struggled as a family and since my wife passed away it has been very hard. I would work odd jobs here and there but I could never guarantee there would be food to put on the table.

In 2010, Michael opened a butchery, only to see drought and high food prices destroy his business: “Life really got hard again at the start of last year. We all began to skip meals.”

Finding stability

We began transferring a small sum of money to Michael each month via his mobile phone. Michael immediately reinvested his cash into the business. He said:

This money has helped put me back on my feet again and get the business to a level where I can keep it going. Now I am somebody – for the first time in my life I am stable.
