Concern Worldwide welcomes official confirmation that Liberia is now ‘Ebola-free’

09 May 2015

Concern Worldwide, Ireland’s largest humanitarian organisation, today welcomed the news that after 42 consecutive days with no new cases, the World Health Organisation has officially declared Liberia Ebola-free.

Concern’s Regional Director for Liberia, Austin Kennan, said:

I am deeply encouraged by this announcement as Liberia is the first country to be declared Ebola- free following the devastating outbreak in West Africa. It would seem we have a welcome end to the national nightmare endured by the people of Liberia for more than a year.

This news offers hope to neighbouring countries, Sierra Leone and Guinea, that a positive ending to this difficult period in their history is within reach. It also shows that effective co-operation between governments, aid agencies and the public in times of crisis produces results.

The first case of Ebola in Liberia was recorded in March 2014. Since then, more than 4,700 people have died and 10,564 people have been infected in Liberia

The Ebola outbreak also had widespread transmission in neighbouring Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Between the three countries, more than 11,000 have died and 26,500 people have been infected. Sierra Leone is currently seeing a marked decline in cases, whilst Guinea continues to see small-scale spikes in caseloads.

Concern has worked in Liberia since 1996. The organisation recruited new international and national staff to man the significant response required to fight Ebola.

Concern’s Ebola emergency response in Liberia included the construction of community care centres, training for medical staff in Infection Prevention and Control, support to quarantined families, rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities, support to schools as they re-opened and providing information to people as to how they can protect themselves from the virus.
