You can help mothers to feed their children

The brutal war in Sudan has now displaced nearly 13 million people. More than 1.1 million have fled into South Sudan. But they have come to a country already devastated by conflict and climate change, driving a humanitarian crisis.

Mothers from both sides of the border have lost their loved ones, homes, land and  livelihoods and have now been forced to seek refuge in crowded displacement camps where hunger and disease spread quickly, giving way to soaring levels of child malnutrition.

In South Sudan and around the world, mothers like Angelina have been displaced but they have not been defeated. They are doing everything they can to feed their children - but the odds are overwhelming. Please help provide displaced mothers with the support they need.

Angelina’s story

Angelina, from Unity State, South Sudan, has five children. The family lost their land, their animals and their livelihood to floods – and with them, their source of food. After arriving at the internal displacement camp, Angelina took to collecting and selling firewood to earn money, which she then used to buy a little food for the family. But it was not enough.

“The biggest challenge we have is food…before (my children) were suffering. They could not even talk, walk, or even wake up. They were just sleeping the entire time.”

In desperation, Angelina was forced to feed her children with water lily roots she dug up from a dirty pond. Not only do they have no nutritional value - they were actually making her children sick. But it was the only way to stave off their hunger.

Angelina's two youngest daughters, Nyachar and Chaudiel, were suffering most. At a Concern-supported clinic, both girls were found to have severe acute malnutrition. The reality is, Angelina’s story is not unusual. It’s the everyday struggle of so many displaced families. And all of this is happening while governments cut back on global aid.

Right now, children are dying. We urgently need your help to provide life-saving therapeutic food and give children a chance to recover.

“We are grateful to Concern for the therapeutic food. Once my baby wakes up in the morning, she takes one, and then she goes outside to play. I have seen some changes. It is not like before.”

There are so many families like Angelina’s, in fact one out of every sixty-seven people globally has been displaced. Whether they are from here Sudan, Gaza or Ukraine and whether they have been displaced by flooding or by conflict, they are resolute in their hope for a brighter future for their children. They are steadfast in their willingness to help others in their community and above all, they refuse to give up hope or be defeated by the challenges they face.

Asma Begum (37) and her husband Abdul with their three daughters Lamia (18), Sadia (16) and Maria (5) and their grandmother Kulsum Begum (72) started CRAAIN in 2020. Asma Begum started as a lead farmer, received training and seeds. Before, she did agri activities but wasn’t very successful. She had received one ring composter from the local gov but no training on how to use it. As a lead farmer, she has supported 400 households in this area. She used to rely on her husband but is now totally reliable.
