Holding the UK government to its climate commitments
In our most recent campaign, we worked together to hold the UK government accountable for its commitments on climate change.
The UK is one of the countries most responsible for the climate crisis. Hundreds of years of polluting gases from our big economy has led to hunger, floods and drought today. The people facing these emergencies across the world right now need us to work together with them to protect all of our futures. However, both as Chancellor and as Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak has watered down the UK’s commitments to providing urgent funding for countries worst hit by climate change.
Right now the money to help worst hit communities is not enough and it's going to the wrong places. It's unacceptable to cut funding that helps the communities hit hardest by climate change find solutions. The UK government is breaking its promises to those worst hit by climate change.
Raising our voices
Our campaigners wrote to their MPs to let them know that we expect more, and joined the digital conversation, sending a collective message demanding commitments to climate action and finance are met. We leveraged the power of social media, particularly Twitter/X, to communicate directly with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
Country analysis: uncovering shortfalls
As part of our commitment to transparency, we commissioned an analysis of how countries, including the UK, were faring in meeting their climate finance commitments. The findings were telling – the UK had fallen short.
Looking ahead
As we look ahead to this COP29, climate finance will be high on the agenda. We will continue to monitor government commitments closely, and push them to deliver what is needed.
Communities from Kenya to Bangladesh are already putting their own solutions in place to protect their farms, water sources and livelihoods, just as they have for generations. By campaigning we can push for the support they need to succeed.
Stay tuned for updates on our future initiatives and opportunities to keep the momentum going.
