Concern's statement on the rapid escalation of the conflict in the Middle East

Press release9 March 2026

The rapid escalation of the conflict in the Middle East is alarming.

With every attack, the crisis deepens. As with all conflicts, the heaviest price is being paid by civilians, especially women and children.  The continued use of explosive weapons in heavily populated areas is putting entire civilian populations at risk and the conflict is rapidly expanding to becoming a regional crisis.

The humanitarian needs that this conflict is creating will last long after the last missile is launched and the last bullet is fired.  Once again, it is ordinary people who will continue to suffer for many years to come. While the humanitarian consequences of conflict are evident, humanitarian funding for new and existing crises is being cut.

The fighting must stop.

All parties must observe their obligations under international humanitarian law. These include the protection of humanitarian aid and workers, halting attacks on hospitals, schools and water infrastructure.

What is needed now is real political will to: de-escalate tensions; protect civilians; uphold international law; and pursue meaningful pathways towards peace.

Without this, the human cost will continue to rise, with consequences felt for generations.

Fiona Gannon, Middle East Regional Director
