Republic of Sudan

Republic of Sudan

Why are we in the Republic of Sudan? After nearly four years of civil and political unrest, the situation in Sudan escalated in April 2023 into outright conflict between rival factions, worsening an already-existing humanitarian crisis. The fighting has forced 1.76 million people to seek refuge in neighbouring countries and have left 6.5 million people internally displaced. And nearly 25 million people, roughly half of Sudan’s population, are now vulnerable and need humanitarian assistance.

Mass displacement due to conflict

The inter-factional violence between the SAF and the RSF has fueled a humanitarian crisis of epic and tragic proportions. The fighting, which started in Khartoum, has spread  across Sudan with major episodes in all states where Concern works - namely West and South Kordofan, and West Darfur states. Specific ethnic groups have been targeted and systematically killed due to their origins. This has revived memories of past horrors in the region, and led more than 500,000 individuals into Chad to seek refuge as of March 2024 according to UNHCR.

Some 6.5 million people are now internally displaced within Sudan and 1.76 million people have sought refuge in the neighbouring countries of CAR, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
