Republic of Sudan

Republic of Sudan

Why are we in the Republic of Sudan? Since April 2023, when the fragile alliance between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) disintegrated, Sudan has been plunged into a relentless cycle of violence and chaos. What began as a political power struggle has rapidly escalated into a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe, wreaking a path of violent destruction throughout the country.

Two years of unceasing conflict have turned Sudan into the world’s fastest-growing displacement crisis, with an average of 20,000 people forced to flee their homes every day.

Sudan is facing the world’s largest humanitarian emergency

In Sudan, 30.4 million - or three in every five people - are in need of humanitarian assistance. As of May 2025, an estimated 12 million people have been displaced, and nearly four million have crossed borders into neighbouring countries.

Half of the population - 24.6 million people - is experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 and above), including over 637,000 people currently facing catastrophic conditions (IPC Phase 5). In addition, 3.7 million children and women require treatment for acute malnutrition.

Tragically, in 2024, only 65% of the required humanitarian funding was secured to support those enduring this devastation. While the 2025 Humanitarian Needs Response Plan seeks US$4.2 billion to deliver lifesaving aid to nearly 21 million of the most vulnerable people, restore basic services, and scale up protection efforts, current funding remains drastically insufficient.
