Tana River County in Kenya has long faced recurring floods. As climate change intensifies, rainy seasons bring increasingly devastating floods that destroy homes, farms, roads and lives, leaving families struggling to rebuild what little they have. To address this, the Tana River County government launched the Eco-Village Cluster Programme which aims to relocate communities from flood-prone zones or wetland areas to higher grounds.   

This learning paper explores how community-driven nature-based solutions can simultaneously support watershed restoration, livelihood improvement, and climate resilience.

Concern Worldwide works with communities on the frontlines of climate change; those who have lost homes, those at risk of displacement, and those adapting to new realities. We hear stories not just about hardship but also about resilience and renewal. 

Concern is urging wealthier countries to keep to their commitment and provide the means of implementation to allow countries that are more vulnerable to climate change to prepare for its impacts.  

In Yemen, nearly ten years of conflict has uprooted communities, decimated public services, and pushed over 80% of the population into poverty.

Resilience is a word we use a lot at Concern, but what does it mean? In general terms, it is a characteristic that describes a person’s capacity to cope in difficult times. But in humanitarian aid and development work, the word ‘resilience’ is used in a very specific way to discuss a community’s response to disasters, shocks and stresses.

This Flood Resilience Measurement for Communities (FRMC) process brief demonstrates how to measure the resilience of a community to floods before and after intervention.
